Welcome to Northern Valley Youth Orchestras, based in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Our school-year program encompasses three separate orchestras and a chamber music program; we also offer a summer chamber music day camp experience. NVYO staff, conductors and coaches all have years of experience working with youth music programs. Note: due to the level of playing expected, NVYO students are strongly encouraged to be actively taking private lessons. Private instructors can be located at the following local places: Arioso Music Academy, Popplers Music, Scotts Music, University of North Dakota Music Department. School teachers may also have a list of private instructors to recommend. The list above is not an endorsement, but intended as a resource.
Allegro – an introductory level string orchestra. Students are expected to read music, follow a conductor, and have a working knowledge of all strings and finger patterns. Approximate Suzuki level 2-3. Rehearsals are Monday evenings 6:30-8 pm, with additional sectionals and dress rehearsals as scheduled. Seating is rotated frequently. No audition is necessary; tuition is $220 for the season.
Philharmonic – an intermediate auditioned orchestra comprised of advancing string, wind, brass and percussion students. Players are expected to be comfortable in a more extended range (shifting for string players), and to be able to play in various keys (through four sharps or flats) and with more advanced bow/articulation techniques. Approximate Suzuki level 3-5. Rehearsals are Monday evenings 6:30-8 pm, with additional sectionals and dress rehearsals as scheduled. String seating is rotated each concert. Brass, woodwind and percussion usually rotate from piece to piece. Tuition for the season is $220.
Symphony – NVYO’s most advanced auditioned student orchestra is made up of highly capable string, wind, brass and percussion players under the age of 21. Musicians are expected to have developed an advanced range and tone, and be able to play in any key. Vibrato and/or other advanced techniques are required, as music is selected from the standard Symphonic repertoire. Rehearsals are Sunday evenings 6:30-8:30 pm, with additional sectionals and dress rehearsals as scheduled. String seating is rotated each concert. Brass, woodwind and percussion usually rotate from piece to piece. Tuition is $250 for the season.
Crescendo, our school-year chamber music program, holds auditions at the same time as the orchestras. Rehearsals are at a separate time and place from the orchestras’, and are arranged by the individual ensembles and coaches. A final recital is held the Monday after Thanksgiving.
Dal Segno is NVYO’s summer chamber music day camp program. Students in grades 5-10 learn to work cooperatively through chamber music concepts. A performance completes the camp session. Dal Segno Advanced also accepts wind, brass and percussion students. (Dal Segno is a musical term that means “the sign” and indicates a return to an earlier place in the music. It’s pronounced Dahl SAYN-yo)
